The Earl’s Emporium
Hull, UK
BRIEF: To design an Emporium for a character from the novel “Neverwhere” by Neil Gaiman. The novel describes an alternate world of “London Below” beneath the streets of the city, where those who ‘don’t belong’ live. The character chosen was The Earl, a medieval lord who lives on an abandoned Underground carriage. Within the novel, the train acts as a gateway between “London Below” and The Earl’s castle. The building was an accumulation of the spaces within this fictitious castle, creating a space that could exist in both the ‘real’ world and the world of “Neverwhere.”
